High School Graduation Requirements

In addition to the five traditional high school subjects (English, social science/history, mathematics, laboratory science, and foreign language), our four-year Great Ideas and Symposium requirements produce graduates familiar with basic tenets of philosophy, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and political science.

4 Years

  • History

    World History, US History, 20th Century Political and Intellectual History, Senior History Elective. Themes of Past History Classes Have Included: Contextualizing Contemporary Problems, Comparative Religion, and Utopian Visions for Social Transformation.

  • English

    Themes of Past English Classes Have Included:  Greek Tragedies, Dante’s Divine Comedy, World Building, Creative Nonfiction and Technical Writing, Critical Theory,  Gothic Horror and the Romantic Movement.

  • Arts Electives

    One Arts Elective Is Required For All Full-Time Students. Options Include:  Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Ceramics, Band, Electronic Music, Culinary Arts, Idea Lab/Inventors’ Workshop, Robotics, Video Game Design, Model United Nations, Photography, Creative Writing, Ethics Bowl, Yearbook.

  • Great Ideas

    High School Students Choose One Great Ideas Elective Each Year.  Some Past Seminar Titles: The Language Game; The Meaning Project; Philosophy and Humor; Welcome to the Magic Circle: The Philosophy of Games; Philosophy of Education: School is a Waste of Time; Religion, Media, and Popular Culture; What’s on Your Mind?; The Philosophy of Consciousness; Philosophy, Film, and the Future; Society and Subject; Critique and Other Philosophical Methodologies; Do Feelings Matter?; Affect Theory and Phenomenology; Utopias, Heterotopias, and More-Than-Human Worlds; The Universal and the Particular; Love, Power, and Visual Cultures; Absurdity and Existentialism.

  • Symposium

    Fall and Spring Symposium Projects Are Required for All Enrolled Students.

3 Years (4 Recommended)

  • Math

    Prealgebra, Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2, Integrated Math 3, Precalculus, Calculus.   Post-Calculus Math Options Include Multivariable Calculus, Number Theory, Abstract Algebra, and Linear Algebra.

  • Science

    Biology, Chemistry, Physics.  Advanced Options Include:  Neuroscience, Organic Chemistry, Theoretical Physics, and the Eudaimonia Guided Independent STEM Project Program.

  • Foreign Language

    3 Years of Same Language Required: Spanish 1-4, Japanese 1-4, Latin 1-4.

2 Years

  • Physical Education

    Team and Individual Sports, Strength Training, Yoga, and Meditation.

12th Grade

  • Senior Thesis and Master Class

    A Writing-Intensive, Philosophy-Based Senior Capstone Seminar, Required for All Twelfth Graders.
